Why is our School named Australia?

During 1990 the Education Ministry requested all establishments in the country to adopt a name which they identified with.

Since then, our school community proposed to call our school "Australia". The influence came from the deep feelings of the cultural tradition, the language and the generosity of the Australian people to welcome many of our fellow countrymen.

It was not until 1998, after a long process, that Mrs Celiria Muñoz Muñoz, our current School principal was welcomed by then Australian Ambassador, Ms Susan Tanner in Santiago, Chile. This was the mark of acknowledgement of the entity to our school named "Australia".

From that day our School has been visited by Australian Ambassador Ms Susan Tanner, Mr John Campbell and the current Australian Ambassador Mrs Elizabeth Schick.

We would like to acknowledge that the assistance given by the Chilean Cultural Association of Canberra and the Chilean residents in Australia for all of the valuable materials provided for our English workshop. The generous support from our Australian friends that visited us for three months, Noeline and Neil Gentle, and Christina Refshauge's must also be recognised. Their valuable contribution to our English program led to an overall improvement in our very limited resources. With all of the assistance received it was possible to commence our English Laboratory classes in 2004.

Another objective of the Australia School of Traiguén is to maintain the cultural interchange, wishes and dreams with the teachers and students of a number of Australian schools that commenced in 2004.

Celiria Muñoz Muñoz

Australia School Principal

In rememberance of Marilyn Stack, our dear Australian friend.

To remember that you are with us

If we are going to express the words ‘thank you’ at our school, there are many people whose names come gratefully to mind. Among them are Marcial Parada, a Chilean friend who lives in Australia, and Marilyn Stack, his lately departed wife, who now leaves her footprints at the school, sleeping peacefully in one corner from where each day she continues to admire, in silence and tranquillity the children of this school, whom she loved so much.

One afternoon when Marcial and Marilyn were visiting Traiguén they stopped at the school and with curiosity and confidence went inside. They visited every classroom talking with teachers and students. They left the school filled with the love of the children and a promise to return one day …and time passed. From Australia Marcial and Marilyn sent us valuable gifts. Their wishes fulfilled, the Australian people came to know about our school Australia and for this we are very grateful. Many thanks and much gratitude to all our Australian friends, who have made our school their friend and continue to hold us in their hearts.

Marilyn:

Your presence which is with us
in a tranquil dream of peace,
the corner that guards your dream
has flowers that never forget.
The song of these Chilean children
accompany you so you won’t be alone.
Their laugh will be always with you.
We love your name, love it
We love it and it is true….
